With the ISMTE European Conference drawing closer, and the full agenda now available online,
It is going to be a packed day, with 11 sessions covering a range of publishing industry topics. From an opening plenary addressing current trends in open access, through practical advice-based sessions such as EASE President Pippa Smart on improving the quality of submissions, Stuart King from eLife on social media and many more, the event looks to be taking in the macro and micro tasks of journal management in an engaging fashion.
We spoke to conference co-chairs Maria Guerreiro (eLife) and Mary Miskin (Emerald) to get a few words about the scope and aims of the event, and what sets it apart from other editorial conferences in our annual calendar.
Maria Guerreiro -
"The theme of this year's conference – 'Working together through constant change' – really inspired the committee to think about what resources, tips and orientation may be useful to editorial managers and publishers to navigate through a publishing landscape that is evolving at a quick pace (in particular with preprints and the possibility of Plan S). At the same time, we wanted to ensure that delegates get into the "we are on this together" spirit. To me, the sense of community is one of the great aspects of ISMTE conferences: they are fantastic opportunities to meet new colleagues, catch-up with old friends and, especially, to learn from one another."There are some very focussed breakout sessions in the agenda this year, on developing graphical and video abstracts, how to approach corrigenda, managing XML workflows and data sharing policies, delivered by some faces that will be familiar to long-time ISMTE members.

"We did our best to have as many practical sessions as possible, as these really allow greater interaction. We had a great response from ISMTE members after a call for proposals, and it has been fantastic to see the committee working together with some of our members in planning some of the sessions – this really embodies the whole theme of collaboration and togetherness. I hope our fellow colleagues join us in Oxford to reinforce this feeling."Mary Miskin -
"We’re looking to make the conference as interactive as possible, to allow members to make new connections, to learn from one another’s experience, and carry those connections and learnings back into their place of work. If each delegate comes away with at least one new contact who they can call on for advice and information sharing, then I would consider that a success!"
The conference will be held at Thatcher Business Education Centre, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, on Thursday 3rd October.
Early Bird tickets are available until 16th September from the conference website here: www.ismte.org/page/2019EUAGENDA
