ALPSP Conference and Awards 2018

On the 12th September, the ALPSP Annual Conference and Awards returns to the UK for 2018. We are getting ready to attend this key event in the scholarly publishing calendar.

The ALPSP conference attracts an international audience from all areas of the scholarly communications industry, and is always a fascinating event to attend. Spread over three days, the event provides a relaxed and friendly environment in which to share information and knowledge, learn about new initiatives, as well as engage in open discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing publishing today.

The key themes of the conference this year are:
  • Openness and Policy All aspects of “open” and transparency, including funder policies and mandates and how these are affecting publishers of all sizes, researchers in all disciplines, and various regional markets.
  • Business and Technology Exploring new technologies driving innovation in content creation and content consumption, including practical applications for Artificial Intelligence and blockchain, new monetization strategies around data, sustainable publishing partnerships, and new markets such as online teaching materials.
  • Researchers and Ethics Examining the publisher role in supporting researcher and author workflows around journals and books across all disciplines, including data and metrics, as well as researcher and author experiences during peer review, ensuring a diverse environment with freedom to publish.

The keynote will be deliveered by Imperial College geologist Christopher Jackson, in which he will discuss his personal experiences in publishing, how academics help shape the direction of the industry, and setting up the EarthArXiv preprint server.

Other sessions address accelerating transition to open access, collaborative approaches to innovations in open science, harvesting and analysing data, evolution of peer review, and Pippa Smart, EASE President and EiC of ALPSP journal Learned Publishing, moderating a session discussing how publishers and editors create trustworthy mechanisms for disseminating research, asking are we adding “quality” in the right places and are we considered “trustworthy” in the research ecosystem?
